MTN guilty of ambush marketing.
MTN has been found to be guilty of ambush marketing, imitation and causing confusion that it is the sponsor of Bafana Bafana.
MTN and Vodacom argued their case before the ASA Sponsorships Appeals Committee on Friday, 23 May 2008.
Vodacom’s complaint was that it was the sponsor for SAFA and the main soccer team which is known as Bafana Bafana and the advertisement in question which read ‘Turning young men into Bafana Bafana’, ‘MTN, proud sponsor of the MTN Cup’ and ‘MTN, proud sponsor of the MTN Under 16 Cup’ created the impression that there was a connection between MTN and Bafana Bafana.
MTN argued that ‘Bafana Bafana’ is the usual or the colloquial referral to the team. MTN also said that the advertisement clearly states the event with which MTN is associating itself, being the MTN Cup and the MTN Under-16.

New Web Portal Provides U.S. Physicians With Unbiased Information On Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices.
The Federation of State Medical Boards Research and Education Foundation (FSMB) announced the launch of a new Web-based tool providing U.S. physicians with access to accredited educational programs about pharmaceutical industry marketing techniques and their effect on prescribing practices.
The portal is funded by a grant from the Attorney General Consumer and Prescriber Education Grant Program, which was created as part of a 2004 consumer protection settlement with Warner-Lambert, a division of Pfizer, Inc., that resolved allegations of deceptive ‘off-label’ marketing of the drug Neurontin. The national program is designed to educate health care professionals about pharmaceutical industry marketing practices and provide tools for accessing unbiased sources of information about drugs.
